What is Shakyo?
Shakyo is a devotional practice of carefully copying the characters of a sutra, one by one. Writing the characters is said to clear away distracting thoughts, purify the mind, and form a bond with the Buddha.
At Onsenji, you will copy a sutra deeply connected to Yakushi Nyorai. A special goshuin is given after the experience. It is held daily, so please feel free to ask when you visit.

Yakushi Sutra
You will copy the Yakushi Sutra, deeply connected to Yakushi Nyorai, the principal image. Those who complete the copying receive a special goshuin.

Upon completion, you will receive a special goshuin stamp.

About Your Completed Sutra
Sutras you copy are offered to Yakushi Nyorai, the principal image, and ritually burned on August 8 at the "Onsenji Yakushi-ko Saito Grand Goma Ceremony."
